Vacation in Bed
Vacation in Bed
at Dartmouth
With a bewildered lips smiled in confusion
not knowing what the ambulance was after
To spread the malice of fear or hope of laughter
All the new dance steps turned to disaster
Being pushed outside the strength so bold
Walking had lost ability to stand & endure
Shine had fallen off the sliver of pure gold
Puzzlement had disbursed the sweet allure
Riding in the black of night so deep
That his supine body was not discreet
He could not tell this familiar trail
blasting bright cabin darkness downed the sail
Off the zooming hearse took a new route
incandescence filled the mobile opening door
the stretcher bed carried me up and down
from bottom, up the elevator to the 4th floor
past murals of Shakers dancing like ponies
or cutting down the trees for flame and frame
to start a new world, a holy order with funny name
and here their good deeds proved their claim
(Written 8 July at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center
in my little 4x 4 inch booklet, with no teeth, no book
to read a long week ahead.)
