Alma, Nourishing Soul

I began reading Lawrence Durrell’s

memories of his life on Corfu

before WWII Fascists crucified Europe

His first full day there

unfolded on the rocky, spring green day

the savory smell of olive tree salt air

the day was 27 April in 1937

My mind flew from the Aegean Sea

to Choptank/Chesapeake Bay shores

7800 miles to a lovely farm

in flat greening Goldsboro, Maryland

Alma, my sister born to spend

Her first full day

A crazy connection maybe

the enchantment a present

a decade before my birth that month

the beauty of that enchanted

Grecian Isle

as lovely to me as her birth

the first for Frederick and Maud

for Alma, big sister

nourished us four younger ones

with waters sweet as milk

and treats jolly as green olives

Such a sweet life she gave

to all who touched her heart

the loving white hound an angel

guides her spirit heavenward

to always answer our prayers

With thankful love, dear Alma ©James M. Frase-White 7 Nov 2024
