His Naughty Grandma




Billy’s Grandma was labeled a nasty bitch

many folks indeed branded her I do recall

thought of her in an ugly sharp knife way

mama maybe too, who never cussed at all


But let me tell you the whole truth

for when I got to know her well my sweet

I found that her problem was her honesty

her tinkling humor did not miss a beat


She would tell folks out of step with life

stabbed their emotive cruel uncivil strife

often it was racist kissed with high holiness

as other humans they would undress


Unclothe humanity as if were a dress

continuing that Jim Crow ugliness

kept folks of color in servile grace

beneath the throne of their supreme place


Oh, yes, but Grandma got us to joke

about the people whom so spoke

realizing they were like a two-faced squirrel

eating nut thoughts that make truth whirl


Turning races to negativity was wrong she said

unlike the lovely quilts and clothes she sewed

saw the world in dazzling color, beautiful

like when she cooked a heavenly stew or two


For growing a garden of color and flavor

she saw indeed that life was to savor

not just the flowers, trees and fields

but for all the good this earth can yield!


She even taught about romance and dance

tho’ Mom said it was frowned upon by her Lord

Grandma showed us in automotive words

that life was far more than Chevrolet and Fords!
