Thoughts rustled last night

4:30 the clock said in the dark

bringing back memories indeed

of that holy Kentucky College Park

There was to be an art exhibit

where students such as I

asked to hang their best work

our art major opera or lullaby

I drew in green ink, and brush

Rodin’s sitting contemplating man

but when I arrived the next 

it seems he stood and run away

No teachers, he is not a potty stinker!

This is the view I painted/drew which flew/threw away!

I asked our virgin art teachers

ancient Madam Matherly and Miss Seifert

where my art proud art work had gone

“Not Asbury College caliber” they did infer

Their naked one was of the Son

nailed to a cross, a catholic romance

as fragrant as a nun’s sweet vow

his holy dying shadow was their dance

A God who was to die for them

to render holy heaven eternally

a cloud of angelic grace to them

So faithful to his manly infinity

For Jesus seemed to have no love

not of the female sex, not he

vowing love for he men disciples

For the man was naked as daybreak

in the bathroom at that it seems

as Art Professors did not know

The great Sculptors universal beam

Rodin’s statue I knew from Museums

as well as from so many books of art

I’d seen it in front of our national gallery 

a green bronze hue aged to fit the part

There were painting of all art majors

of a variety of types and colors

with one special graceful, solo painter

a solitary artist like none of the others

For it was Ed, who nipped at their souls

kept silently to his private life “outside” us

not unkind, but not friendly to compatriots

which we were not,as it riding on a separate bus

Ed was honored with such holy grace 

left to become a famed painter of the story

with nude men populating biblical scenes

the Savior Son was glorious in bare glory 

God must have loved the brush strokes

for Ed came back to Asbury again

to be the holy master of the department

of artists, clothed we hope my friend.
