Dream Last Night


Oh, so lovely to wake with a smile

tho’ it is the middle of the night

but gentle was the memory dream

so sweet, as if lit by candle light


For in it was a boyhood friend

Ten of us went to school together

12 years from our little town

each one of us a scholastic brother


The son of our postman, Mike

and later Barry, his little brother

and with her loving kindly smile

Mike’s shy and pretty, pretty mother


It was all about some cheese

I had a bit I’d hidden away

inside a little round cookie tin

that I’d been given for play


It was a sweet cheddar I think

I did not know of delicious cheese

or such good taste as a pup of a kid

but oh how that cheese did please


Such a happy time I felt

to share with those I love

In tiny Goldsboro we were

blessed from angels above
