For Twirling Lovely Ruth
May Day Majorette
Funny memory dancing into my brain
A May Day Memory of 1950’s fun
Mom picking me up
at Goldsboro School, all 2 rooms
Grades 1 & 2, Mrs. McClung
(loving petite like Petunia Pig)
3,4 & 5, Miss Dennison
Goddess of my 4th grade
Today, a glorious bright May Day
Ruthie & Judy were performing
at their Greensboro middle/high
5 long miles away
Everyone there excited
their kids band playing under
Mr. Roberts fine direction
Then marching out in front
the Majorettes twirling batons
I could only see sister
Ruthie, the star
throwing it to heights
catching it in a fancy dance
twirling behind around
up and down
between the legs
from hand to hand
so fine so fine so fine
so proud that sister was mine
Next they played for the Maypole
a twirl with of boy girl boy girl
Judy and girls like festive flowers
as they wrapped the straight pole
with boughs of seasonal color
boy girl boy girl boy girl
round and round they interlaced
until that pole was wrapped so tight
an upright flute that seemed to sing
a present for hallowed Spring
Such a festive time it was
we little ones were filled with glee
Yes so proud of my sisters
their world would be mine too
to go to Greensboro School
To walk in the musical steps
as Ruth traded her little skirt
and that festive twirling rod
to play the beautiful trombone
in a suit of blue and gold
the top star in the band
to celebrate a life of music fun
I would get to someday, yes
take her place in high school band
to slide that golden horn
with the memory a souvenir
that gorgeous day in May
that wrapped my soul in beauty
twirled in twine and a baton
o what a happy day!
