First Bird of Spring
To be an Angel
(for Jessica)
Name that Tune . . .
(or songbird heralding Spring)
What is that bird singing
in my ear?
what is that song
that I hear?
Is it a Meadowlark?
Or a song sparrow?
The song shot in quickly
pierced sharp as an arrow
A song is on a visit
rhythmically calling
notes like dance steps
standing and falling
Strange solace, cuddling
notes that smell and glisten
with force and fragrance
the inner ear awakes to listen
the tempo and the pattern
your inner ear recalls a place
where you were once before
melody prances with powerful grace
Music, music is the master
bringing anew the stunning flower
words or notes that blossoms again
afresh that blossoms at this new hour
