Raven Steals the Sun & Moon
Raven Steals the Sun and Moon
(as retold by James M. Frase-White, from Tinglith and Haida Versions)
Long, long ago Earth
Was blanketed around
in a Shroud of Darkness
Only creatures of the night
As black as we know the darkest night
Without the glory of daylight
Or the gentle caress of moonlight
Raven, with vision deep and clear
Could see lingering beyond the deep
Outside our round planet
Beyond the somber black
Two globes, one small one big
Of glimmering gold and white
Colors he had never seen before
And dots far far away sparkling
With enticing light, not night
A treasure he knew that he must find
Raven could hear the drumming
Of the creator gods
Steps that were moving, dancing
Around the glistening globes
OPening his wide black wings
Raven flew breaking through the cover
Those Gods indeed, were prancing round
Their eyes closed as if to pray
And block the bright light
Raven opened his claws
To grab the large golden globe
Beneath his strong broad legs
Suddenly colored like that sun
In orange joyous and bright
Into his beak he grabbed the little one
As it to glowed in the color of this moon
Down to home Earth he flew
Dropping the hot globe far in front
On his homeland grew colors brilliant
Flooded with blues and greens
And spots blooming in rainbow shades
To the night side he took the same circle
Which seemed catch the light of the sun
And gave us our sweet Luna
To keep the world company at night
A time when creators could rest
And those of darkness night live
The gods had now awakened as these
Balls of dirt and stone moved away
And with a sweet song of praise
Thanked Raven with delight
As we humans, now that we have come to life
Should give praise to that bird
And all his corvid and colored flying friends
Our thanks we shall in bright joy give
For the beauty of the flying friends
Daylight in which we grow
And Moonlight touching poetic souls
With the joy of Raven’s gift
Blessed by heavenly gods and all of us on Earth
